Automatic Account Link and Guest Mode in ROKU
Permalink

ROKU developers added new features in the updated version of OS 9.1. Two most interesting features are - Automatic Account Link and Guest Mode

What is Automatic Account Link?

As the name suggests it is a feature that automatically links customers ROKU accounts to their ROKU devices. ROKU Developers added this new feature to make it more convenient for the customers to use ROKU accounts on multiple ROKU devices without signing in again and again.

Automatic account linking enables channels to authenticate customers using an access token or authentication artifact stored in the ROKU cloud. This simplifies authentication for customers with multiple ROKU devices: Once successfully authenticated on one device, customers are automatically signed in when they activate additional ROKU devices linked to the same ROKU account. ROKU development team made this feature available for developers and publishers as well to integrate into their channels. Streaming channels are expected to integrate support for Automatic Account Linking shortly.

How Automatic Account Linking works?

Customers can set up their subscription channels when activating additional ROKU devices on their ROKU account. If a customer has already logged in to a supported subscription service on a ROKU device, he/she will not require to enter the account credentials again when launching the same channel to their newly subscribed ROKU device.

  1. Subscribe as many channels you want on my.roku.com.

  2. Log in to your new ROKU device.

  3. Choose the device that you want to link, and it’s all done.

Guest Mode - is it really for the Guest?

ROKU development team came up with a perfect feature for the people like me, who visit their grandparents or go on trips more often or who are looking for a short term rental.

When enabled on a ROKU TV or ROKU streaming device, it allows visiting guests to sign in to their subscribed channels using their account credentials. Guests can also specify a date on which they will be automatically logged out from ROKU device.  With this feature, you need not worry about missing your favourite shows streaming on your subscribed channel you can watch it anywhere you go.

What as an owner you can do?

You are the one responsible to set the Guest Mode on; go to Settings>>Sysytem>>Guest Mode.

As an owner, you can turn Guest Mode on/off for specific ROKU devices by scrolling to the “My linked devices” section on your “My Account” page. In addition, you can use your account page to remotely sign a guest out of a device if the guest left early or by mistake selected the incorrect sign-out date. As being the owner you always have the control in your hands.

ROKU Developer team added a new sub-feature in Guest Mode. Customers can now turn Guest Mode on/off for “specific ROKU devices” as well by scrolling to the “My linked devices” section on their “My Account” page.
